Besides this i consider X (and curses) the only portable environment to use if i ever were to write something GUIsh - this is no offense - i would never lock my application into something so proprietary as a GUI library for VGAs. And as for the installation process: support the lowest common denominator which is and i believe will be a character terminal for many years and many architectures different from the PC toy machines we are using now. Imagine FreeBSD on an HP9000/800: no VGA, not even a bitmap display, just a character terminal as the console....
