This seems related to running out of resources, like space under /tmp.

I did svnlite checkout the entire source code of the kernel and
my /tmp dropped to 1% or so. Trying to build the kernel on such
situation, did produce the mentioned errors. Cleaning up /tmp fixed the
problem. Nothing arm specific.
