Basically what I did was portupgrade eel2 which then enabled me to upgrade Nautilus2. This however did not solve my initial problem of not being able to associate files with programs. Strange thing though, after doing some playing around, right clicking the files in icon view does allow me to associate the files with a program but in list view it does absolutely nothing. This is a minor problem in my books and I'm prepared to live with it till the next portupgrade of Gnome2. Thanks in any case.
