What I've noticed about iwi is that in the presence of an 802.11a access point (note that there is also, obviously a b/g ... since the iwi driver doesn't support a in stable), the driver sets itself to the "down" state randomly every few minutes. It doesn't appear to do this if no 802.11a access point is present.
