The first place I would look would be the irq and i/o settings on the 
adaptec. Did you set the adaptec to i/o address 330? Also, make sure it's not 
sharing an irq with something like your sound card, etc.. It sounds like a 
hardware conflict, but could be something more complicated (or simpler, even).
