I *do* have kernel firewalling support turned on (using the mostly default "client" mode in /etc/rc.firewall. The only thing not default is I added a line to pass ssh connections). I thought this might be part of the problem, but I have not yet tested it. When I get a minute, I'll turn off firewalling to see what happens. However, like I said in the original message, ONE port DID work (don't remember which one), and that was with the same setup.
