I have been using the 'suggested way' ever since fbsd4, never been a problem. I used the same way even to downgrade from -current, when Promise support for the ata driver started to appear in -stable (but not on this particular box). What was strange about this failure was that the make installworld build just hung.... no error messages no nothing.
