Check the permissions on /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86.  Maybe you need the suid
bit set?

-rws--x--x  1 root  wheel  1810212 Feb 21 19:26 /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86
   ^

If you don't, just do chmod 4711 /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86.
