The media is not so expensive, and I have found them to be *FAR* more reliable than the Travan type drives. Although the actual Travan drive might be cheaper at first, you end up paying for it in the not so long term due to the high cost of the tapes.... Not to mention (in my experience anyways), Travan tapes going bad. If you dont need anything really big, check out some of the online auction houses.
