What's <gateway> ?  Only an IP number works - names aren't 
understood.  Also, look at the man page for a description of what 
each arg is (add <dst> <mask> <gateway>).

You'll need to find out more about why it's losing the connection.  
The latest version of ppp (see http://www.freebsd.org/~brian) has 
much better logging capabilities than the version in 2.2.2.
