A fine gentleman from Australia pointed out to me that BSD does not like some 
non-standard IDE controller settings.  Sure enough, I was using BLOCK mode.  On 
disabling block mode, BSD boots fine.  DON'T USE BLOCK MODE w/FreeBSD 2.1!
