This is fixed in -current by placing external modules in /boot/modules and the kernel along with it's locally compiled modules in /boot/kernel. My suggestion would be to insure that the loader knows about /boot/modules and start advertising it now for things like DRI since that moves us closer to current without a hugh POLA violation.
