I did what you said (BTW, you can't do M-x customize RET
tramp-debug-buffer RET because when you press the first RET, customize
would load the top-level options. It would be M-x customize-variable
RET tramp-debug-buffer RET).

BTW, the *tramp/su root@localhost*  buffer contained:

root@localhost using su...

to come up...
