Since nobody answered yet, I'll jump in.

FreeBSd focuses on development on the i386 Platform. Open focuses on 
security and portability. This does not mean Free is insecure, aas well 
as it does not mean Open is less developed.

Surf at the various BSD websites (e.g. www.daemonnews.org) to learn more 
about both.
