The command 'ncftpput' (in the ncftp package) was designed for ftp'ing from a script. ncftp is a _highly_ recommended FTP package. But more pertinent to your goal, to update a website you want to look at 'rdist'. From the manpage Rdist is a program to maintain identical copies of files over multiple hosts. It preserves the owner, group, mode, and mtime of files if possible and can update programs that are executing.
