I have no idea either, perhaps because John Fieber had originally copyrighted the handbook this way (not at my urging) Wolfram saw this as a statement of general intent or something. AFAIK, the handbook and web pages have been changed to "(C) The FreeBSD Project" which doesn't actually mean anything per-se and is probably why FreeBSD, Inc. was chosen before - it seemed just a little more tangible.
