I had the extreme good luck to attend one of Dr. Stevens' all-day
seminars
at Usenix in Monterey, CA, USA, a couple of months back.   I'd have to
say
he was the living anthesis of that old saw.  I learned more in that one
day
on how to think about networking than I had dreamed about, and most of
it
drew on his experience *doing* things.  

*sigh*  He will be missed.
