You can indeed just use the Linux JDK, or even better, you can install th=
e=20
port of the 1.4.1 jdk to get the latest and greatest JDK. However BE=20
FORWARNED THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH JAVA ON FREEBSD WITH ANY JDK THAT YOU U=

The FreeBSD port of the JDK is incredibly fast because it is a native bin=
ary.=20
With the Linux port you always are executing through an emulation library=

However, since you are just starting out it really shouldn't make much of=
 a=20
difference. I would suggest install the JDK1.4.1 port. You can find this =
in

/usr/ports/java/linux-sun-jdk14

You will still have to download the binary file from Sun's site, put doin=
g a=20
make all install clean in the aforementioned directory will tell you wher=
e to=20
get the file.=20
