Just installing the latest version of ppp solved my problem.  I didn't even
have to touch the /etc/ppp/ppp.conf file.

I tried this on 2.2.2-RELEASE.  Will the same sources also compile under
2.1.7.1-RELEASE?

For the curious I'm still seeing this in the log file even though everything
now works:

07-28 19:04:01 [299]  his = c023, mine = 0
