Totally newbie question, so hang on or bail out now....

I've read some posts recently which spoke of squid in context of a proxy
server. I'm not learning anything because I don't know what either do.
Anybody know of a URL which delves into _these_ dark secrets? Once I'm
up to speed on the above, I can put it all in context of FBSD. Tia....
