In answer to my own question, while trying to rebuild gnomepanel, it turns out that libwnck references the no-longer-existant libXRes.so, so I need to rebuild libwnck before rebuilding gnomepanel. I cannot find any error in any error log which tells me that the reason the window-list applet cannot start results from a loader error. What else might I find that doesn't work now that I have switched to X.org? I really do not want to do a portupgrade -fr pkgconfig, but maybe I need to? /Joe
