You'll need the cnews port as well for this to work at all. I'm guessing that BSD came with INN, which is more common nowadays (not that cnews isn't good for somethings--I'm replying to this message right now that was posted on my home machine with cnews and read with nntp). Look for cnews and stan barber's nntp original packages for documentation.
