Try just sitting at the computer and waiting.  With your configuration, 
it could take several minutes.  The program should unfreeze then.

My hunch is that it's scaling fonts.  There is a bug in X11R6 that causes 
problems like that.  You can run the xfs program to fix that problem (if 
it turns out that is indeed the problem).
