Indeed, there is a bugzilla entry (which is more than a year old) http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=124370 And it was closed on 2004-12-31, but only for mozilla >= 1.8a5 (as far as I can understand). It's a pity I've found it only after my problem was solved. It could save me some time. Now I have an understanding of what has happened: In mozilla file: URL's are disabled in non-local pages for security reasons. I suppose, mozilla < 1.7.5 do not apply such a restriction for image sources and that's why myportal: works with older mozilla.
