The problem is that you do indeed have the geometry wrong. Disks hanging off of Adaptec controllers have one of two geometries: Extended translation enabled - 64 heads, 32 sectors/track,#MB reported cylinders by diskprobe Extended translation disabled- 255 heads,63 sectors/track,#MB reported cylinders by diskprobe/7 Determine whether you have extended translation enabled or not, and go from there. Once way to almost assure sucess is to create a small partition on the disk with DOS.
