I had a similar experience with Samba-3.4 recently. I entered the "WINBINDD_ENABLED=YES" in the /etc/rc.conf file to get Samba working. Since I don't need the "winbindd" service, I reconfigured the Samba port to not build with it and then rebuilt the port.
