What is the version of gcc in the base system of 5.3? That's probably what's showing up with gcc -v. Is there an equivalent for gcc to use.perl? (Note: I don't currently use 5.x, and I haven't installed a gcc port on my 4.x box, so I don't know if this is correct; it is just a suspicion on my part.)
