I think I was half asleep as usual... I was also a bit annoyed (nothing to do with you!!), as I’m only connected to the Internet through a Windows machine at the moment which of course does not allow me to build packages myself. Maybe mplayer, xine, etc could you the same scheme as Mozilla does for the java plugin: just give a warning when a related non-essential package is not present, which win32-codec is as far as I know.
