What I did (because my PCMCIA NIC wouldn't work 'out-of-the-box') was follow the install-from-a-dos-partition directions in the handbook. I sucked down via FTP the 'bin' distribution. I had no problem with using the funky USB floppy drive, though; the VAIO was all to happy to boot off of it.
