sounds like a wrong configuration on the serial port that the modem can't 
handle.  Have you looked at stty -a < /dev/cuaa1? You may need to adjust 
the cuala1 port to get the settings you want.  (the cuala1 port has the 
settings for cuaa1; the settings for cuaa1 are reset to cuala1's every 
time the port is opened.)  

If you are using ppp, you might issue "show modem" to see what ppp thinks 
is going on.
