Go to http://soekris.com/ and click on Support.  You'll find some 
tutorials on installing FreeBSD on their embedded boards.  One of the 
tutorials is "miniBSD - reducing FreeBSD".

Also, Michael Lucas has an article on installing OpenBSD on one of their
