I have to put my vote in for #1.  Another possible option may be to use
the splash screen that ships with GNOME, and then provide users with the
option of installing FreeBSD related splash screen(s)?

Perhaps a x11-themes/freebsd-splash-screens port tied to gnome-session
port?
