Yes I realize this should be posted instead to > something like majordomo-questions@majordomo.org ;-) It's up to your email client (not the mailinglist) to thread messages, and the algorithm most use is to thread messages together based on References: and In-Reply-To: headers, and optionally tack leftover messages into those threads based on the subject header. References: and IRT: are always honored, even if the subject is different. For example, if you're using Mutt, messages without References: or IRT: (but with a matching subject) are placed by date within the thread and marked with a *. If you're reading a list on the web threaded by MHonArc, they are relegated to the bottom of the thread, below a spacer. Simply replying to a message but changing the subject will not break a thread. The safest way to create a new thread based on an existing thread is to manually copy your "parent" message into a textfile or X clipboard, start a fresh new message, pase the parent in, trim, and add "> " yourself (or have your editor do it if it has a "paste as quotation" function. -- Dan Nelson dnelson@allantgroup.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
