Certainly, but you will have to do it in stages to follow the beaten (read tested) path. 8.4-9.0, 9.0-10.0, 10.0-11.0 ... You might even have to take smaller steps. It occurs to me to wonder whether the freebsd-update servers still carry all the steps, that would be much faster. Just go 8.4-stable->9.0-release and use freebsd-update from there.
