Agreed -- from experience with a couple of HP Procurve 2424M switches and various 100Mb cards, the "Auto" setting is less than reliable... My Netgear FA310TX(?) and Intel EtherExpress 100B cards all get detected correctly, but most of the other ones can be a little flaky with auto-detect...
