Try to compile a simple "{}" C program and put it into /tmp.
Does the /usr/bin/strip fails with the same error?
If yes, could you recompile the whole src/gnu/usr.bin/binutils with
`make -DDEBUG_FLAGS=-g clean all', and then try to
`gdb <compiled_strip_binary> /bin/cat' again to see where in source
it does fail?
I'm also attaching you (in next private message) a working version
of /usr/libexec/elf/strip, so you could try it.
