You could also try the 'official' answer by John D. Polstra, the CVSup
author and maintainer, at http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=24597
There's a detailed analysis and workaround of this particular little bug
in CVSup's handling a very obscure and rare CVS repository weirdness.
