I should also mention that I have an almost-identical server running FreeBSD 7.3-release-p2 in backup production and did not experience these problems when upgrading from php 5.3.3_2 to php 5.3.4. Something in my 8.1-release development server is causing the problems with upgrading PHP, so I'm reluctant to upgrade my production servers as they are absolutely identical until I find a fix.
