         ^^^ Er, this s the 589, a PCMCIA card.  you want ep0.  

The ep driver doesn't support PnP; configure your 3c509 for non-PnP mode
and force it's settings.

Set 'Plug & Play OS' in your BIOS to 'no'.  If that isn't available,
you'll have to construct pnp boot-time commands.  See the handbook for
mail archives for command lines.
