Found the following searching usenet... if this is true, is this patch/workaround going to be implemented? I'd rather not stick to 3.x on the laptop unless I really have to.. Basically, your motherboard's onboard IDE controller is broken, and the new ATA driver doesn't include the fix for this that the old WDC driver did (remember 'options "CMD640"' in your kernel config file?). The solution is to get a hold of a Promise Technologies' Ultra33 PCI controller card ($29), hook your hard drive(s) and CDROM to it, and disable the motherboard's IDE controllers in the system setup (disable the controller or set all drives to 'none' or 'not installed'). Don't use the Promise Ultra66, as it doesn't support ATAPI devices like CDROMs. (I learned this the $49 hard way :-) If you need any help, let me know...
