Odd - in my version of /usr/local/etc/courier-imap/authdaemonrc the line is:

authmodulelist="authvchkpw authcustom authuserdb authpam"

(I just added authvchkpw to the start of the default list).

Moreover, I have no line beginning AUTHMODULES=
