I can't boot 5.3 with only 12 MB under qemu. 16 MB works fine. sysinstall requires 24 MB but can probably do with less provided you configure swap; however, the install CD won't boot with only 16 MB. This may be an artifact of how qemu works, or a qemu bug (see attached screenshot - FreeBSD doesn't seem able to use all 16 MB) Note that a minimal 5.3 install requires nearly 150 MB of disk space (135 MB of data + 10 MB filesystem overhead), but sysinstall doesn't complain until you go below 118 MB. By way of comparison, Fedora Core 3 refuses to install with less than 64 MB, and even then it's dog slow and requires significant amounts of swap to complete the installation (with only 64 MB swap, it crashed halfway through). It does however run fine (if a little slowly) in 16 MB, and manages to use 12 out of the 16 (see other attached screenshot).
