I was scratching my head on this for awhile myself.
You have to mount using the correct slice. For example, on my sd2 disk
the dos stuff is on slice 3 (as shown by fdisk). So I had to:
mount -t msdos /dev/sd2s4 /dos
^ corresponds to fdisk slice 3
