I added WITHOUT_GNOME to /etc/make.conf, which built a xscreensaver
without GNOME support, but would still satisfy GNOME 2 at startup. =20

Looks like the detection is a no-op, then.  Maxim took care of this by
adding back sawfish2 to the gnome2 meta-port.  Now we have to figure out
how to get sawfish settings correctly saved and restored across
sessions...
