It is rumoured that Matthew Dillon had the courage to say: > I suspect you are getting a panic, but due to X running you can't > see it. The goal should be to get to a DDB prompt on the console > to be able to see the panic and 'trace' and 'ps', and then to > (if possible) get a kernel core by typing 'panic' from the DDB prompt. Obviously, getting into DDB is crucial here. However, I am not sure if I recall an occasion on which the lockup occurred on the console. At the moment I can't rule out that there is indeed a panic occurring on the console, although I _think_ that the lockups are complete, i.e. no panic. Since my uptime is still low, I'll recompile my kernel and throw DDB_UNATTENDED out of my kernel config. I'll leave the system on the console instead of in X whenever I leave the console and I'll just wait and see what happens. At the moment, through crosschecking with others, I've concluded that the system hang is either triggered by a specific combination of kernel options or by XFree86 version 3.3.6; and of course only on SMP systems. That is, unless I'm overlooking something. It'll take me some 5-7 days to get results (i.e. a crash); I'll keep you all informed.
