Is it possible you're testing with an .xinitrc that doesn't start a=20 window manager? In that case, X starts but then immediately quits since=20 there's no window manager running. And the log file looks just like=20 yours. (I ask because it just happened to me: .xinitrc just contained a=20 setxkbmap command.)
