The error had nothing to do with DNS configuration. This turned out to be an issue with /etc/mail/local-host-names. While local-host-names did exist and listed all domains for which I wanted to accept mail, I had overlooked the fact that local-host-names is a sendmail database type file, and had not run "makemap -e hash /etc/mail/local-host-names
