This kind of problem happens to me too
But only when using mitsumi cdroms drivers.
Aparently, the cdrom got an error on reading the CD
and does not report it to the OS (kernel driver bug, I suppose)

Try loading the cd with an Sony cd33a or cd31a, it works fine....
