I do not use a display manager either, not worth the effort for me. 
Just startx.

My .xinitrc has this:

   # WB: map the Zap combination
   setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp

   exec /usr/local/bin/startxfce4 --with-ck-launch
