If I use /stand/sysinstall to fdisk it and disklabel it, disklabel gets so far as writing out the changes, executing a "newfs -b 8192 -f 1024 /dev/rwd2s1e" and that itself fails, returning a mount error when /stand/sysinstall tries to mount the drive. Upon exit from this situation, if I do:
su-2.03# disklabel wd2
I see:
